The initiative seeks to ensure that all children in Chile can read with comprehension by the end of 2nd grade.

Reading comprehension remains a critical challenge in Chile, as more than half of 4th-grade students are unable to fully understand texts at their level. To address this issue, Red Por un Chile que Lee launched a national project to raise awareness and provide support for improving early literacy.

The launch took place at the former National Congress, where the Minister of Education, Nicolás Cataldo, together with UNESCO’s Regional Office Director in Santiago, Esther Kuisch; the president of Red Por un Chile que Lee, Carolina Andueza; former Ministers of Education; parliamentarians; mayors; university representatives; and civil society organizations, signed the agreement to secure changes in this pressing reality.

Human Development Lab associates Pelusa Orellana and Carolina Melo participated in the event, reinforcing the Lab’s commitment to strengthening reading skills across the country.

The initiative aims to eliminate reading comprehension gaps by 2030 and is structured around seven pillars: setting a national goal, monitoring progress, ensuring high-quality instruction, engaging families from early childhood, providing timely support for students falling behind, expanding access to books and reading opportunities, and highlighting progress as a way to drive collective learning.
